Frequently asked questions
How do I choose a wood by hardness?
Set a minimum Janka value to screen out softer woods. Flooring and high-wear surfaces usually want 1000 lbf or more; carving and hand-tool work favor softer woods under 1000 lbf.
How is density shown here?
Density is estimated as specific gravity times 62.4 lb per cubic foot, at about 12 percent moisture content. It is a good proxy for how heavy a finished piece will be.
Are the prices accurate?
Prices are indicative US retail figures per board foot for planning only, not live quotes. They are flagged as estimates in the underlying data and vary widely by region and supplier.
Why do some woods show a dash for movement or hardness?
Sheet goods do not have a Janka rating, and some imported species are not in the published movement table, so those cells are left blank rather than guessed.
